Artist Statement - Barbara Kagan
I am a graphic designer and illustrator by trade, and have worked in daily newspapers, for a non-profit theatre, and in higher education.
As a lifelong swimmer, I have spent many hours staring at the bottom of a pool. It is my meditation and my medication. And also the inspiration
for these pieces.
The images are built in Quark and Photoshop, and are made up of many layers with different levels of transparency. The layers are comprised
of photos or illustrations of water, scans of old monotypes and fabric, spray painted and floral patterns, and geometric shapes and grids.
The final images are then uploaded to a photo lab and printed on lightweight aluminum plates using a dye sublimation process. The image is first inkjet-printed onto a transfer paper. The paper is then adhered to a sheet of pre-treated aluminum. Finally, it is put into a heat press where the temperatures reach between 350-400 degrees. While being subjected to extreme heat and pressure, the dyes from the transfer paper turn into a gas, are pressed into the surface of the metal, and then solidify into the treated aluminum. Once out of the press, the aluminum cools and the image is permanently fused beneath the surface of the metal substrate.
