Already an accomplished artist specializing in drawing, printmaking and papermaking, Karen began combining digital & traditional media using Photoshop in the mid 90’s. An Adobe Certified Expert in Photoshop, Karen was Associate Professor of Art at Wingate University in North Carolina prior to her move to New Haven, CT in 2009. She currently serves as Adjunct Professor at the University of Bridgeport and Albertus Magnus College and is a member of City Gallery in New Haven.
I enjoy the ancient art of papermaking equally with using the latest version of Photoshop, but within and beneath it all is a love of drawing. My drawings begin spontaneously with pen & ink lines on paper then are further developed the images with liquid acrylics, colored pencils and the occasional wire. I hold no specific intention as to what they are “about” and I delight in the immediacy and playful intricacy of making them. The mixed media assemblages combine handmade paper forms, richly textured painted surfaces, digital collages & found objects. My hope is that my work engages the imagination and heart of the viewer.

CONTEMPLATION SERIES: When this series began, I was not planning to do a series. I was merely exploring my interest in circles within squares and the excitement of color within. When I exhibited these images, along with other work I had done during that time period, they were quickly referred to as Mandalas. Perhaps they are!
SHORELINE IMAGES: For many years, I have traveled with my family to the Outer Banks of NC. I continue to be in awe of the ever-changing power and beauty, and I love creating images relating to the pounding water, the shoreline and the life forms nearby. I have incorporated litho elements, as well as collagraph or woodcut into many of my monoprints. I strive to create images that appear simple and serene to the viewer/myself, while employing varied and complex layering processes. What processes are used is determined as the print evolves.
